Im quite surprised how easily some ppl are stereotypin. I dont see anythin wrong with Hams personally. Considerig that before the net was in use or before personal home PC’s existed, ham radio was typically the first international chat room ever going. Some ppl today still struggle to use PC’s cos of the technical side. There are ppl who sit at PC’s all day. Chat all day. Dont see daylight. So why brand Hams like that when others are the same? Its just preference of communication.

“The knack – its a rare condition characterised by an extreme intuition about all things mechanical and electrical….and other social ineptitude….” Fantastically dry humour by an engineer for engineers :)

I’m an electronics engineer and radio amateur. I don’t smell of mothballs or wee. I’ve earned good money as a consultant, and I’d say I’ve not done too badly. I was born to be an engineer and am proud to be an engineer – 73 de M0SNR

I’ve been a nerd for ages – I built my home network from scratch back before wiFi was cheap and easy to use.

A life balance will do just fine to keep the relationship happy. Its not like they’re together 24/7…so i’d hope for their sakes.

ARE YOU SERIOUS? your boyfriend needs to dump you and get someone else who doesnt think using your brain is some sort of bad thing. your comment offends me on such a deep level. HOPEFULLY THEY WONT LET HIM BE A HAM? you should be ASHAMED of yourself. you seriously need to get a new perspective. being a ham is about using your brain to learn about electronics and be social with people. i hope he passes his test and spends countless hours enjoying his hobby.

    get a fucking life..

@Mimislegs Dont let him become a ham. hams are not into cute women and almost never have sex. As the saying goes, “Old hams never die they just smell that way!”

hey, my b/f is only 26, he’s skinny ,never wears shorts with white socks and black hard shoes. Generally speaking, he’s a functioning member of our society ….can he still be a “ham”? I don’t want him to be because I would be totally embarrassed, the whole thing is just, well…WEIRD. My friends grandfather was a “ham” so anytime I think of a ham guy, I think of an old house that smelled like mothballs.. Hopefully they won’t let Mike be a ham or whatever

lol, ham radio kooks, we got some in our neighborhood, they have old timey TV twin lead strung out all over the place, we’re going to get them with the HOA rules, would rather kick them out completely, too bad it’s not legal. These guys are hated by all in the neighborhood. they seem to be living in a world 50 years behind the time

@TheZeke1974 Ok, I will give you antisocial with Idiots! I hate idiots. If you can’t hold a conversation at a level greater than 3rd grade, I don’t even want to meet you.
The rest of your statements, well they are like the “Oh, your book smart, but you don’t have any common sense”… This is a statement made by dumb people trying to raise themselves from the protoplasmic slime of which they will never emerge.

My last job, I ended up working for an Idiot Mechanical Engineer… He said, you are the best Controls Engineer I’ve ever met, but you think different than anyone, I’ve ever met….. My reply… That is why I’m the best Control Systems Engineer you have ever met…..

What makes an engineer and/or ham radio amateur? easy! #1 Being antisocial.
#2 Being over 40 and still a virgin. #3 Never taking a bath or shower. #4 Being morbidly obese. #5 never seeing the light of day because one tends to stay locked in the house and/or ham shack!!!!

@cybernut509 In my experience, if you are ever able to tell a good joke, the span of people that will be able to understand it will be quite low. Hence the chance of having a potential understander within a normal range of people is almost nil.
